POSSIBILITY OF EXCITING SHORTER-TERM (0.25 to 2 years) POSTS IN AUSTRALIA; SUIT SECONDMENTS, SABBATICALS, CAREER BREAKS, RECENT-RETIREES, POST-DOCS; expressions of interest sought from PhD-level Medical Physicists with a strong research and publication track record and with appropriate recent clinical and R&D experience.

On the back of a recently-formed collaborative between all six Australian Universities providing Medical Physics programs, support is being sought from a network of funders including universities, government, hospitals, etc. for conjoint appointments between university and hospital Medical Physics departments in the general area of Radiation Oncology  R&D and academic support.  Posts are not yet guaranteed and number and level will depend on funding.  At this stage we would like to demonstrate  interest in such posts to help us to move forward with the bids and with pre-preparations in the event of a successful outcome.  

Each post would be in an individual university but expected to spend significant  time in partner clinical departments. The roles would be around providing enhanced links between universities and hospitals, supporting Medical Physics students and clinical trainees in placements and research projects, collaborating in and supporting R&D projects in the hospital departments and contributing to the universities own research programmes in the field.  If posts are funded and established, they may be in various cities around Australia and it may be possible for an appointee to have some time in more than one place.  If bids are successful, we should have clearer plans by April 2012 and be looking for appointees to start as soon after June 2012 as possible, hence the need for pre-preparation even before the outcome is known.  The funding will be for 2 years maximum in the first instance and at this stage we would like to assess interest in such posts for periods of from 3 or 4 months up to the full 2 years.  There is the possibility of extension afterwards, but this would also depend on continued funding, which in turn will depend on how successful the posts have been.

A position as postdoc in radiation physics is vacant at the research group of the Laboratory of Radiation Physics, Research Unit of Oncology, Institute of Clinical Research.

The position will be either one 2-year fulltime position or two 2-year halftime positions.

The postdoc will be expected to carry out research on the possibility to extract toxicity information from Cone Beam CT images (see Radiother Oncol 2011 100 351-355). The work involves extraction of 3D image information from Cone Beam images and registration of the information with the delivered dose distribution. Extraction of image information is dependent on high quality images, thus optimization of images is part of the work. The optimisation could be related to optimisation of acquisition parameters or new image reconstruction algorithms (iterative and or scatter correcting algorithms). Development of models describing the expected toxicity based on the Cone Beam images will be an important part of the research. Statistical analysis of model estimates and clinical outcome are essential in the research, and will be performed in close cooperation with medical doctors and Ph.D. students. The postdoc will be expected to be involved in the supervision of master and Ph.D. students related to the Laboratory of Radiation Physics. The postdoc will also be expected to be actively involved in writing applications for research grants related to the Laboratory of Radiation physics.

The potential applicant will be expected to have a background as Ph.D. in physics, biology, medical physics, or medicine at the time of employment. Applicants with expertise in working with image optimisation and deformable image registration also having working knowledge about designing, writing, and documenting software to handle large amount of image information will be preferred. Knowledge of statistical analysis of theoretical and actual outcome parameters will be important in this position.

Experience within teaching and supervising will be of importance. If it is of interest to the applicant an agreement concerning teaching at the faculty's pre-graduate educations might be negotiated.
